Ellinor Green
Born in 1922, Ellinor Green literally grew up
with aviation in Iowa City.
Her father owned the farm just north of the
Benjamin farm, which is the current site of the Iowa City Airport. The
farm started at the northern edge of the Benjamin farm and extended north to
Hwy 1 -- which is the current site of the Gateway One Plaza mall.
As a girl, Ellinor witnessed the birth of
aviation in Iowa City. Her father's greenhouse overlooked Smith Field,
from which she witnessed many of the earliest flights into Iowa City.
In 1930, at the tender age of 8, her family
attended the Grand Opening of the Boeing/United hangar. Inside the
gigantic hangar Boeing had several impressive aircraft on display --
but what she remembers most was that United Airlines served hot dogs and
hamburgers, free of charge! |
