2005 Oshkosh
|
| Every July thousands of aviation enthusiasts
gather in the Mecca of General Aviation, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for a week-long
celebration of flight. For the 23rd consecutive year, we joined
them! |
|
 |
| |
| Oshkosh is always amazing, but 2005
was special, with appearances by "White Knight" and "SpaceShipOne", flown
into Oshkosh -- and outer space -- by the world's first private astronauts.
Also flying in were "GlobalFlyer", the first aircraft piloted solo around
the world, and the immaculately restored P-38 Lightning, "Glacier Girl" --
an aircraft that had spent nearly 60 years under the Greenland ice cap,
where it had crash-landed in the early days of World War II, before being
recovered in the early 1990s. |
| |
| On the Saturday before the big show,
we hosted our 3rd annual "Pre-Oshkosh Fly-In Pool Party" at the
inn,
for all the pilots en route to Oshkosh. This was well-attended
(the hotel was sold out, and we had quite a few "drop-ins"), and -- with
temperatures hovering around 100 degrees -- the pool was VERY well-used! |
| |
| We then flew up to Oshkosh in a
gaggle of four aircraft, with some loose formation flying and air-to-air
photography thrown in, just to get Mary warmed up for an intense arrival
into the busiest airspace in the world. |
| |
| Then, on Wednesday we hosted our 3rd
Annual "Oshkosh Cookout" at our campsite in the North 40 camping area.
With tremendous assistance from aviation newsgroup regulars Jim & Tami
Burns, and Montblack, we were able to serve food and drink to 50 attendees
from all over the world. |
