What IS this page?
As the video page has grown, its connection with
the hotel has grown less obvious -- and I get an amazing number of emails
asking "WHAT is this hotel doing attached to your
video webpage?"
That's quite the opposite relationship, really.
The video page -- so comprehensive today -- started as a tiny adjunct to our
main web site, and initially contained only videos that depicted flying into
our aviation theme-suite hotel. (Which is located next to Iowa City
Airport, in Iowa City, Iowa, home of the University of Iowa -- go Hawks!)
Over time, however, friends sent me other
interesting videos, and I would add them to the page, mostly for viewing by
fellow pilots. Then, one day back in 2004, a British magazine
published our URL in their "cool websites" section, and the whole thing
started to take off.
Next thing I knew, I was receiving video
submissions from all over the world! They are still rolling in at an
alarming rate, but I limit what's on this page to videos that meet the
following criteria:
- The video must not graphically depict death or
injury. This is not a train-wreck site. I have no interest in
appealing to prurient interest by depicting random acts of death and
destruction.
- Viewing the video must give pilots an
opportunity to enhance flight safety, or they won't be included.
(Well, okay, I bend that rule a bit on some of the funnier videos...)
To this end, I try to include as much
knowledgeable commentary as possible with each video. I also try to
include links to aviation safety websites that may further enhance our
knowledge of the accidents depicted.
Finally, we neither buy nor sell videos, but only
host them for pilots and aviation enthusiasts to view, with hopes of
minimizing accidents in the future. Please don't ask if we can sell
them, or if we can publish them on DVDs, because
(a) We don't own them, and
(b) We're too busy remodeling the hotel to waste
any more time on this nonsense!
Blue skies!
