The Thunderbolt Suite
|
| |
|
The
Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the largest, most heavily armed single-engine
fighter of World War II. With eight .50 caliber Browning machine guns and
the ability to carry rockets and bombs, the “Jug” (as it was affectionately
known) was a ferocious ground-attack machine. It was credited with the
destruction of 9,000 locomotives and 86,000 rail cars in the European
Theater alone! |
| |
|
Powered by a huge
Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, the Jug could fly faster than 400
miles per hour, had long range, durability, and the ability to out-dive any
enemy fighter. Because of this it was also an outstanding escort fighter,
able to protect our bombers on missions deep into Europe. (Click

lodging experience. |
