The "Red Baron". The
"Ringmaster". The "Flying Circus". All of these names, now over 85 years old, still ring true to our ears, and refer to that most famous World War
I "ace of aces", Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richtofen.
|
| |
|
With 80 confirmed "kills", and
probably another 40 to 50 which took place over enemy lines and could not be
confirmed, the "Red Baron" remains an enigmatic character to this day.
Despite the amazing successes brought by his keen eyesight and quick reflexes,
he shunned publicity and became increasingly withdrawn throughout the war.
When he finally fell victim to the perils of combat on April 21, 1918, even his
enemies mourned his passing.
