Sunday
-- The Flight Home
Starting Friday, forecasts were showing the
remnants of a tropical storm pushing into the middle of the country by
mid-day Sunday. As a result we planned to depart Washington at
O-dark-thirty, in an attempt to get to Indiana before the storms arrived.
It was not to be. First our wake-up call
never came, then we blew our back-up alarm clock. Finally, our airport
shuttle bus was late, all of which resulted in our getting to
Hawthorne-Piedmont a couple of hours behind schedule.
Unfortunately the weather forecast (for once)
proved to be 100% accurate, and we ended up hitting low clouds, heavy rain,
and thunderstorms near Indianapolis. We ended up stopping for lunch in
Portland, Indiana (with John, a fellow traveler who was also waiting out the
weather), and spending the night in nearby Anderson, just north of
Indianapolis.
That night, tornados swept through the area, but
Atlas came through unscathed...
