The show in Lakeland is always excellent, and the grounds are small enough to get around more easily than Oshkosh.  Without the kids, we were able to bring full-sized bicycles, and we made good use of them throughout the week, saving miles of walking.

Here are some pix from the show:

Bear-on always keeps watch over our campsite...

Formation flying...

A balloon launch, as seen from our campsite...

Douglas C-54 cockpit...

Another shot of the C-54...

Our campsite...

Cessna's new Light Sport Aircraft prototype...

Cessna's "Next Generation" GA plane...

Smoke in the distance from a fatal landing accident...

An F/A-18 taxies past our campground...

Another shot of the Hornet...

Just set up -- first beer of the show!

Another landing mishap...this one everyone walked away from...

Mary climbing out of the tent...

Mary in an Adirondack chair at Margaritaville...

A Mustang over-flies our campsite...

Ready to hit the flightline!

Atlas in a Florida sunrise...

Another one...

Bear-on soaks up the Florida sun!

Dew on the wings made fascinating patterns...

These patterns are very hard to photograph!

But they sure look cool...

A World War II Soviet fighter...

We attended several parties while in Lakeland, all revolving around our working relationship with Flying Colors Glass.  (FCG's owner, Gary Elshoff, did the stained-glass windows in our lobby.)

The first party was an informal affair at the nearby South Lakeland Airport, a fly-in community.

Here are some pix from that party:

Golf carts are a way of life in Florida...

I took a bunch of pix of Gary in the waning sunshine...

This is a 4000-foot grass strip. They get King Airs in here!

This is also a way of life here...constant flying, and partying!

Ultralights are the aircraft of choice...

This RV was on its inaugural flight

Gary also threw a more formal party at a private home at South Lakeland, to introduce some new products.

Here are a few pix from that party:

Gary is ready for the party to begin!

Party goers...

Chris working the smoker...

Gary, Mary & Jay at the booth...

Another shot of the gang...

Gary, Mary, Jay & Craig -- ready to party!

We ran into quite a few folks from the aviation newsgroups at Sun N Fun.  Unfortunately we only took pictures of a few.  Here they are!

The inimitable Bob Moore with Mary...

Another one with Bob!

Throughout the week, several DC-3s flew some VERY impressive (and low!) formations with various aircraft.   I managed to capture a few pix of them as they flew low over our campsite.

The week absolutely flew by.  With no kids, and the ability to go wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted, we experienced a level of freedom that we hadn't felt since 1989 -- the year before our oldest son was born!

Alas, all good things must end.  Here are some pix from our departure day on Sunday...

Mary preflighting before departure -- look at that sky!

A throrough preflight after a week in the weeds...

Taxiing down the flight line...

Taxiing past a flightline tour tractor...

Taxiing past folks who looked just like our friends, Gary & Sharon...

These people wondered why we were waving like crazy people!

The line ahead as we taxi out...

Another shot ahead...

The line waiting to depart was very long...

And included a Supermarine Spitfire!

After waiting ten minutes, he had shut his engine down...

Which caused an even greater delay for everyone else...

Since we had to stop for lunch *somewhere*, we figured we'd drop in on Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and take our friend Jim Fisher out to lunch.  Luckily, he had just eaten, so we got off cheap!   It was great to see Jim again, and he took us to a nearby Tennessee Valley Authority-built dam and recreation area, just for fun...

Jim & Jay at TVA dam...

Jim & Mary...

The dam from the ground...

The dam as we departed Muscle Shoals...

The flight home was beautiful, and entirely uneventful.   For the first time, ever, we were able to fly to Florida and back without running into any significant weather.  In fact, it only rained once the entire week -- and that was while we were in the tent!   A perfect week, and a perfect ending.

When we arrived in Iowa City, our son, Joe, was ready to head out to his high school prom.  He stopped down at the hangar to greet us, and I snapped these pictures of our fine-looking young man!

Jay posed with everything we brought to Florida -- it barely fit in our full-sized pickup truck!

Our son, resplendent in his new prom attire...

Joe, looking good!

It was a wonderful week, and we're already dreaming about returning one day.  Luckily, throughout the week I was able to capture little snippets of video on my Canon Elph digital camera -- so we can always watch our little movie when we need a "Sun N Fun" fix...
