In
December, 2004, we received the following correspondence from Nan Bowman
Cavanagh, who was a United Airlines stewardess in 1947:
"I was born and raised on a farm 10 miles east of
Iowa City. Every Sunday my father would take us to the Iowa City
Airport to watch the airplanes, so that is why I wanted to be a stewardess
for United." |
| |
| "After becoming a stewardess I was married to a
United pilot, and together we flew in and out of Iowa City many times." |
| |
| "Iowa City was known as the 'milk run.'
We would take off from Denver, Colorado, where I was based, in a United DC-3
Mainliner. We would then fly to Chicago, making all the stops along
the way -- including Iowa City. It took us EIGHT HOURS!" |
| |
| Imagine spending 8 hours flying in an
unpressurized propeller-driven airliner? Imagine doing it every day,
for years? |
