| We at the Inn have been blessed with an aviation
library of over 180 volumes -- all available for our guests to borrow and
read at their leisure. Most of these books were donated to us by Joe
Kennedy, of Newark, Ohio, in memory of his brother Dr. Jim Kennedy.
|
| |
Dr.
Jim was a long-time Iowa City orthodontist, pilot, former crop-duster, former
F-86 fighter pilot, EAA member, and aircraft homebuilder. Over
the course of his lifetime, he collected a wide variety of aviation
books, artwork, and memorabilia. Sadly, Jim passed away from
Parkinson's Disease in the summer of 2004 -- but his library lives on. |
| |
| When Jim was gravely ill, his brother Joe needed
to find a new home for Jim's extensive library. With no one in his
family interested in aviation, Joe called the Iowa City Airport in search of
anyone who could put his collection to good use. The wonderful folks at the
airport immediately put him in touch with us, and within minutes I was at
Dr. Jim's apartment, helping Joe move everything. |
| |
| I remain amazed at the depth and breadth of Dr.
Jim's collection. Books on virtually every aspect of aviation,
from aerodynamics to World War II, from fluid dynamics to fabric covering an
airplane -- are represented in his collection. |
| |
| He also had collected over 25 complete sets of
aircraft homebuilder's blueprints and plans, which we have donated to our
local EAA Chapter 33. Their members will make great use of them for
many years to come. |
| |
| Our guests -- and the entire Iowa City pilot
community -- owe Dr. Jim Kennedy a tremendous debt of gratitude.
